"Unveiling Wednesday"
A Creative Title Sequence in 2D Animation
"Wednesday (2022)" is an enthralling series based on characters created by Charles Addams, brought to life by the program creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. The show premiered on November 23, 2022, in the USA on Netflix, seamlessly blending elements of comedy, horror, coming-of-age, and supernatural intrigue. Set at Nevermore Academy, the storyline centers around Wednesday Addams as she navigates her emerging psychic abilities while unraveling a chilling mystery linked to her parents' past—a tale that stretches back 25 years. This project is an attempt at creating an animated title sequence for the aforementioned series.
Storyboard
Following the development of a mood board to visualize the desired aesthetics and illustration styles, a storyboard was meticulously crafted to outline the animation flow. The storyboard strategically emphasized key plot points essential to the storytelling of the show while maintaining an air of mystery about the narrative details.
Illustrations
Following the completion of the storyboard, detailed compositions were meticulously created to encapsulate the essence of each scene. Each composition was strategically designed to facilitate smooth animation, with careful consideration given to every motion. The illustrations adopted a flat, illustrative style complemented by bold gradient backgrounds and pronounced use of noise and grain effects. This stylistic choice was deliberate, aiming to evoke an air of mystery, impending doom, and darkness that resonates with the themes of the show. The following are the major illustrated compositions.
On the Editing Table
After finalizing the compositions, they were imported into After Effects and edited as vector objects. The entire animation was subsequently exported, and subtitles were incorporated using Premiere Pro.
The Final Output
The official music from the "Wednesday" series was integrated, along with additional sound effects, to amplify the overall impact. Subsequently, the final output was rendered.
This project was developed as part of my final jury submission for the course "2D Animation and Motion Graphics" under the mentorship of Dr.Vijay Dua during the 7th semester of Fashion Communication at the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.
